How to Desqueeze Anamorphic Footage on iPhone
A step-by-step guide for iPhone shooters. Go from squeezed camera roll to correctly proportioned, shareable footage in seconds.
The iPhone Anamorphic Problem
You just spent an afternoon shooting with your anamorphic lens attached to your iPhone. The oval bokeh looked incredible through the viewfinder. The flares were perfect. You nailed every shot.
Then you open your camera roll, and every single photo and video looks wrong. People are stretched tall and thin. The beautiful wide composition you saw through the lens is compressed into a narrow, distorted frame.
The core problem: iPhone has no native anamorphic desqueeze. iOS does not know your anamorphic lens exists. It stores and displays the raw, squeezed footage with no way to preview the correct proportions.
This means you cannot review your shots in the field. You cannot share to Instagram without the footage looking wrong. You cannot even tell if your composition worked until you transfer to a computer and open editing software.
Desqueezed solves this entirely. Here is the complete workflow.
The Complete iPhone Workflow
Shoot with your anamorphic lens
Use your native camera app, Filmic Pro, ProCamera, or any camera app. Shoot as you normally would. The iPhone records the lens metadata in every file.
Open Desqueezed
Launch the app and tap to select your footage. You can pick individual photos and videos, or select an entire album from your camera roll.
Auto-detect handles the rest
Desqueezed reads the metadata from each file, identifies your anamorphic lens (Sirui, Moment, Freewell, etc.), and determines the correct squeeze ratio. No manual input required.
Review and share
Preview your desqueezed footage at the correct aspect ratio. Share directly to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or Messages. Or save back to your camera roll.
Why Not Just Fix It in an Editor?
You could transfer your footage to a computer, import it into Premiere or Resolve, manually set the pixel aspect ratio for each clip, export, transfer back to your phone, and then share to social media.
Or you could desqueeze on your iPhone in 5 seconds and share immediately.
The iPhone workflow exists because most anamorphic phone footage never goes through an NLE. It is shot for Instagram Stories, TikTok, personal memories, or quick social shares. The round trip to a desktop editor is absurd for this use case.
Which Anamorphic Lenses Work with iPhone?
Every major anamorphic lens designed for smartphones works with iPhone and Desqueezed:
- Sirui 18mm f/2.8 (1.33x) -- The most popular choice. Clips directly to iPhone via Sirui's phone mount.
- Moment Anamorphic (1.33x) -- Works with Moment's phone cases. Clean flares, good build quality.
- Ulanzi 1.33x -- Budget-friendly option with solid optical performance.
- Smallrig 1.33x -- Another affordable 1.33x option with a universal clip mount.
- Freewell 1.25x -- Slightly less squeeze for a subtler widescreen effect.
Desqueezed supports all of these and auto-detects the correct ratio for each. For a full list, see the anamorphic squeeze ratio chart.
Sharing to Instagram and TikTok
Anamorphic footage produces ultra-wide aspect ratios (2.37:1 for 1.33x lenses on a 16:9 sensor). Instagram and TikTok have specific aspect ratio requirements:
- Instagram Feed: Supports up to 1.91:1. Anamorphic footage will be letterboxed (black bars top and bottom) or you can crop to fill.
- Instagram Reels / TikTok: 9:16 vertical. Anamorphic widescreen can be placed in the center with bars, or cropped dramatically. Consider shooting vertical anamorphic for Reels.
- Instagram Stories: 9:16. Same considerations as Reels.
- YouTube: Supports any aspect ratio. 2.37:1 anamorphic looks cinematic with automatic letterboxing.
Pro tip: Desqueezed supports vertical anamorphic. If you rotate your anamorphic lens 90 degrees (or use a PL-rotated adapter), you get a vertically desqueezed image that is perfect for Instagram Reels and TikTok -- extra tall with that anamorphic character.
Batch Processing Your Camera Roll
The real power of Desqueezed on iPhone is album-level batch processing. Instead of selecting files one by one, you can pick an entire photo album and desqueeze everything at once.
Create a "Shoot" album in your Photos app, add all your anamorphic footage, then select that album in Desqueezed. Every file gets analyzed individually and desqueezed with the correct ratio.
This is especially useful when you come back from a trip or an event with hundreds of anamorphic photos and videos. For more on batch processing, see the batch desqueeze guide.
Video Quality: No Re-encoding
A common concern with phone-based workflows is quality loss. Every time you process a video, there is a risk of re-encoding, which degrades quality.
Desqueezed does not re-encode video files. It corrects the aspect ratio by modifying the file's metadata, leaving the actual video data untouched. The output file has identical visual quality to the input file. Pixel-for-pixel identical video frames, just displayed at the correct aspect ratio.
Photos are resampled using Lanczos interpolation, the same algorithm used by professional photo editors, at full quality.
The Workflow That Actually Works
If you shoot anamorphic on iPhone, the practical workflow is simple:
- Shoot.
- Open Desqueezed.
- Select your album or files.
- Tap Desqueeze.
- Share wherever you want.
No computer needed. No editing software. No manual ratio selection. No quality loss. It takes less time than opening Instagram.
For the general desqueeze tutorial, including NLE methods, see how to desqueeze anamorphic footage. If you are using Sirui lenses specifically, check the Sirui desqueeze guide.
